In the modern business world, we often feel as though spirituality and finances exist in two separate universes. We tend to believe that after the devotion following a spiritual practice, in the cold reality of Monday morning Excel spreadsheets and market decisions, the Lord has left us to our own devices. This division is a misconception.
The economic life and the world of our finances are not a domain devoid of God. This sphere is the primary arena for our spiritual maturity. This is where the Shekinah – the glory of the Divine Presence – can shine, and where we can unfold the divine resources entrusted to us: our talents.
The Astounding Proportions of Scripture: More Than Economics!
Many are surprised by how practical a book the Judeo-Christian Bible is. Christian financial advisors and theologians – including the renowned Howard Dayton, founder of Compass Finances God's Way and researchers with a theological vision from Dave Ramsey – have demonstrated that more than 2,350 verses in the Judeo-Christian Scriptures deal with money, wealth, and stewardship.
To put this into context:
- • The Bible speaks of prayer in approximately 500 verses.
- Faith is likewise attested to in barely 500 verses.
- 16 out of Jesus' 38 parables relate directly to the proper management of money, property, and material goods.
This means that the Word of God speaks about money twice as many times as it does about faith and prayer combined.
Why? Because the Lord knows exactly: the responsible management of material goods is a direct measure of our spiritual growth and trustworthiness. As the Master says to the faithful steward: “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.” (Mt 25:21).
Yet Why Do We Believe That God Has Abandoned Us in Our Finances?
If revelation guides us so abundantly, why do we still feel a sense of loneliness during our economic decisions? The answer lies in spiritual obscuration and false theological narratives.
1. The Erroneous Separation of the Sacred and the Profane:
Gnostic-rooted thinking has made Western culture believe that matters of the soul are pure (sacred), while matter, the market, and money are defiled (profane). This dualism hides the theology of creation from us, according to which the Earth and all its fullness belong to the Lord. This is confirmed by one of the rawest statements in the Old Testament: “The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of Hosts.” (Hag 2:8).
2. Prosperity Theology vs. the Idealism of Poverty:
We oscillate between two extremes. On one side stands the „prosperity gospel” which reduces spirituality to a coin-operated vending machine, and on the other side is the view that sets poverty up as holy in itself, generating guilt in the successful entrepreneur. Since neither distorted image provides answers to everyday business dilemmas, we feel that theology has failed us.
3. The Forgetting of Stewardship:
When we forget that we are not the owners of our wealth, but merely its caretakers (spiritual stewards), the burden of the business rests solely on our shoulders. Anxiety then silences the inner divine guidance.
The Theology of Talents: Activate Your Received Capital!
A talent in the biblical era did not merely signify an abstract ability or skill. It was the largest existing unit of weight and currency—that is, tangible capital itself. When God entrusts you with talents, He places this pure spiritual and material capital within your inner world.
Isa Divine Business does not give you new talents; rather, it calls forth those talents that you yourself might not even know about yet, and helps to multiply them in the right direction—both in your private life and in your entrepreneurial existence.
For as the psalmist sings about deep communion with God: “All my springs are in you.” (Ps 87:7). This is your true, God-given resource. It is then that we realize the most crucial truth: your talents represent your real wealth.
Success is within you. Your greatest asset is You yourself!
According to the language of spiritual theology, the faithful management of this divine capital rests on three pillars:
- Acknowledgment of divine ownership: The Lord is the source of all your material resources. You are His trustee in the market, managing this inner capital. Never forget the Old Testament warning: “You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’ But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth...” (Deut 8:17-18).
- Creative risk-taking: In the well-known parable, the servant who buried the talent—that is, the capital—in the ground out of fear received judgment. God has called us not to passive security, but to the value-creating growth of the capital entrusted to us.
- Building the Kingdom of God on earth: Profit is not the ultimate goal, but the fuel. The purpose of the Divine Business approach is to create more profitable enterprises, self-actualized individuals, just structures, workplaces, and value through multiplied capital. By doing so, we make the love and justice of God's Kingdom visible in everyday economic reality.
He who has ears to hear, let him hear, and vision...
God has not left you alone in your finances. On the contrary: your economic life is the laboratory where the divine capital within you—the talent—becomes tangible reality, love, and material abundance.
The next time you open your business statements, do not lock the Holy Spirit out of your office.
Feel free to ask Him for wisdom and guidance, because managing the capital entrusted to us is not a worldly constraint, but a sublime spiritual calling!
